Blogging with Purpose

When I first heard of blogging I wasn't too impressed. I thought it was just a means of escaping reality, anonymous venting, or simply writing a diary on-line. I had no idea how fulfilling and valuable it could be. I have been blogging for 3 months now and wonder why I wasn't doing it sooner. It has forced me to hone my communication skills and to be more internet savvy.

Rich Tatum gives some insight to the value of blogging. The following is an excerpt from the linked post.
"Blogging, in some ways, is like an interest-bearing savings account. As long as your ideas are only spoken, they’re being spent as soon as you generate them — just like spending your entire paycheck the very week you get it. But if you can “bank” some of those thoughts, they’ll go to work for you on your behalf, influencing more than just the handful within earshot. And like money in the bank, your blog-published ideas compound their influence week after week after week."

Julie says "Every idiot has an opinion, but not every person takes the time to translate what is observed before shouting out an opinion."

That is what blogging has done for me. It has caused me to look at my opinions and thoughtfully consider whether or not they are consistent with the actual meaning of scripture. Pray for me as I endeavor to post the messages of timeless text.

That is really interesting to show your impression of blgoging before you ever blogged. My impression was VERY different too.

For me it is done "out of pastoral overflow”. If someone were to look at my posts, they would notice a definite pattern of our Sunday sermons and Wednesday night studies being cut into smaller bits and put up as posts. Since I know ahead of time I will be putting it on the blog, it makes me write everything down instead of “winging it” when coming to passages I have studied before, and it gives opportunity for further study, reflection, and accountability to our members, and of course, visitors to the blog. Done correectly, I am more than all for it, I would recommenrd it for the reasons just stated and more.

For non pastors, it still serves to hone the skill and see what others are saying and many other things...it is somehting I truly believe the Lord is pleased with...

I started with a purpose, yet my post tonight seems more like a diary when I read it again.
Perhaps tomorrow I can get back on track.

Glad you're enjoying your time here in the blogosphere. I knew you would if you ever got started. It's like having pen pals from around the world, don't you think? I have found we can learn a lot from other people's insights, as well as about ourselves.

Sure danielle b. I would be delighted to be linked. I'm finding that it is a good way to incorporate the ideas of others w/o typing so much, and it adds to the fellowship.
